Students who decide to study abroad in Malaysia are allowed to work on a part-time basis during semester breaks, festive holidays or more than seven days of holiday for a maximum of 20 hours a week. International students are permitted to work in restaurants, petrol kiosks, mini markets and hotels except in the following positions: cashier, singer, masseur, musician, Guest Relations Officer.

All students aspiring to work part-time must have a valid 'Student Pass'.

Applicants for the ‘Student Pass’ should submit:

  • A photocopy of their passport (pages containing information of the bearer and the valid Student Pass pages)
  • Address, Contact number and letter from the prospective employer
  • RM120.00 (Non-refundable processing fee)
  • The application to work part-time must be forwarded by the representative of the University to the Immigration Department Headquarters Malaysia. The University must provide a supporting letter allowing the Non-Malaysian student to work, and which includes the dates of the semester breaks.
  • Students will be interviewed, after which the application will be either approved/declined.
  • The passport of students whose application has been approved will be endorsed accordingly. 

The University is required to submit a quarterly report to the Immigration Department about the students’ academic progress. The extension of the approval to work will only be given if the student maintains a good academic record during their study in Malaysia.

Wages:

The drawback of living in a place where the cost of living is less is that the salaries on offer are also not very high. Wages usually get capped at around RM 150 for a week’s worth of work. These earnings can be used for minor expenses and one definitely needs to have strong financial support to live and study in Malaysia. One cannot subsist on wages earned by part-time work. 

Post-Study Work Rights:

The scenario is not that great for international students to find a job within Malaysia after their studies. When a job is announced the first preference is for Malaysian citizens. It is advisable to look for a job in one's own country rather than waiting and finding a job in Malaysia. International students who are lucky to land a job in Malaysia on completing their studies; need to secure an ‘Employment Pass’ before they can start working.

How do we process a student Visa to study in Malaysia?

A visa is required but the procedure is simple i.e. You do NOT need to apply for a visa from the Malaysian Embassy in your home country in order to study in Malaysia, with the exception of students from the People's Republic of China. The visa will be issued to you upon your arrival in Malaysia at the immigration check point provided you have valid travel documents and a letter of approval for a student pass by the Malaysian Immigration Department.

What is the 'Student pass' in Malaysia all about?

It is like a replica of a visa. It serves a similar purpose as the visa. The process of applying for a student pass is simple. The Malaysian institution of higher education that has offered international students like you a place to study at their institution will apply for the student pass on your behalf, prior to your arrival in Malaysia.

Applications will be submitted by the respective higher educational institution, to the Director of Pass & Permit Division Malaysia, Immigration Department Headquarters, in Kuala Lumpur (e-Student Pass System). Students do not need to apply directly to the Immigration Department under this procedure.

Prospective students who decide to study abroad in Malaysia will be informed of their application status by the Immigration Department in Malaysia through their educational institutions within an estimated 7 to 14 days after the application. A prospective international student must have an approved student pass before entering the country.

What are the employment legislations in Malaysia?

Students are allowed to work part-time for a maximum of 20 hours per week only during semester breaks or holidays of more than seven days at restaurants, petrol kiosks, mini markets and hotels as long as their student passes remain valid. Students are NOT permitted to work as cashiers. In addition, in the hotel sector, students are not allowed to work as singers, masseurs, musicians or GROs. Students are not allowed to engage in any job or activity deemed to be immoral, whilst they study in Malaysia.

Application to work part-time must be made through the educational institution at which the student is studying. The student needs to be present with the educational institution representative at the Immigration Department when submitting the application.

Are there any entrance tests to get admitted into Malaysian universities?

Fortunately, no, there are no mandatory test scores required to be submitted but it is always recommended to submit IELTS or TOEFL scores to universities for extra credit that could increase the chance of being admitted.
